About the Certification Program

This program is very comprehensive, therefore there are no electives. The courses complement each other and follow a logical progression, first laying a foundation of knowledge and then building upon it. Our integrative approach, which brings together science and technique, promotes understanding of each component and its relationship to the whole. Because people acquire knowledge in different ways, material is presented for auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners.

There is a strong emphasis on the use of proper body mechanics and the development of palpation skills. Proper body mechanics (the effective use of the therapist's body) reduce the risk of injury and the effort expended during each massage. This promotes job satisfaction and longevity in the field. Palpation is the ability to sense and differentiate the underlying structures of the body through the hands. Skillful palpation is the trademark of a great massage therapist. Used together, palpation skills and proper body mechanics produce more effective massages.

The final part of the program is an intensive Practicum which is carried out in our Student Clinic. The clinic is modeled on a professional practice, but is designed to be a supportive environment for the students. Clinic Supervisors, who are Licensed Massage Therapists, are always on hand. There is no time limit to complete the Practicum. Students set their own clinic schedules, allowing them to go at their own pace. As the students practice their massage techniques, communication skills, and record keeping, they experience a powerful transformation. They begin to see themselves as Professionals.

The community created in the MITM classroom becomes the nucleus of a valuable professional network. After graduation our students have been highly sought after, and most of them report that they are, "As busy as they want to be."
